Spring Concert - May 22nd 2005

Fifteen music lovers were on hand Sunday for the annual Spring Concert, Jug style (also know as the Assault Rifle Shoot).   Talk about heavy metal!  The lead was played mostly by the AR-15 section, which consisted of at least 6 instruments.  AKs and SKSs filled out the chorus, and there were soloists on the mini-14 and assorted special interest pieces.  Of course there were at least a dozen semi-auto handguns playing backup and support.

The first event of the day was a six target speed shoot open to both long guns and pistols.  The long gun winner was Dave Schaffer hitting all six targets in 5.32 seconds with his AR.  Mike Hutch Jr. won the handgun portion of the event with a 5.49 effort, again hitting all six.

The most earth shaking event of the day was the iron plate knockdown from the hip shoot.  Teams of three shooters lined up with multiple clips and attempted to set fasted time to knock down two steel plates at 50 yds.  Some teams took 30 seconds or longer and dumped hundreds of rounds in their effort, but the team of John Scudder on AR-15 and Bill Hitchcock + Scott Bradbury on AK's managed to do it in 3.33 seconds!  Woody, Ed Wargo and Dave Schaffer won the 25 yard six clay bird shoot with a 7.88 second time.  John Scudder edged out Woody in the three position run & gun. Then Dave Schaffer won the Hillary Rodham fast draw event to close out the competition portion of the day.

From then on it was open range as everything that was not nailed down was blow up.  The only downer of the day was the weather, which had everyone in winter coats and some in gloves by the end of the day.  I can't say how many rounds were expended overall, but when we cleaned up the range we filled a Coors Light 30 pack box with brass, and we didn't get it all.
