A good fight on the Jug Battlefield Server - Jan 15, 2006
Sunday night Jan 15th we held a CONQUEST game (no bots) using the Invasion of the Philippines map only. Six players showed up, though not all at the same time. We did manage to always have four playing so it was always a good fight. Paul, Dave and Woody played the entire game, Ed played almost the whole night, Wayne played early and then Jonathan came in later. It was a blast.
We
found out that Invasion of the Philippines is really tough to win when you are
on the Axis team. The Allied team holds all the bases at the start and unless
the Axis can take and hold at least one base they constantly loose tickets
(points). We played six to eight games in the two hours and the Axis only
managed to win once. That was in the last game, when Paul and I figured out
the tactics needed. Even then it was a real fight to the end. Paul and
Jonathan would up in a ferocious PT boat battle in the bay. I had killed Dave
and then sat in a DEF gun watching the battle proceed but from a long way off;
I couldn’t tell which boat was which from that distance. Eventually they sank
each other’s boats, but Paul was killed while Jonathan wound up having to swim
to shore from the middle of the bay. The long spawn time kept Dave out of the
game long enough that I had time to go down to the dock and get a boat and go
out looking for Jonathan. It was fish in a barrel at that point.
The computer picked the teams all night and the parings changed around every game. Everyone got to win a few and lose a few. I proved that if a good pilot could get into the Corsair immediately at the start of the game they could keep the Axis from ever getting to shore by constantly taking out the landing craft. I did that for five minutes or so in one game and it was so one sided I took the plane back to the base and returned to fighting on the ground. Everyone had their moments of glory and moments of pain. The long spawn worked well; it made you be much more cautious about getting killed, and when you did get killed it gave you time to go get a beer or put wood on the fire, etc.
We will try and do it again next Sunday night. It will be conquest maps again. This time we’ll put up two maps and play back and forth between them. If you are going to be able to play, think about what maps you’d like me to load and email me your top two choices. I’ll put up the two that get the most votes, with first received as the tie breaker in deciding.
Be there,
Woody
